Both the Sony PSP and PSP Go are ready to welcome a new game later this year with the release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The fabled gaming franchise returns to the portable system in this highly anticipated title. Now, we have experienced Metal Gear Solid on the PSP before, with Portable Ops a couple of years ago, but this is the first incarnation that will be directed by the mastermind behind the franchise; Hideo Kojima, and this could only be a nice sign.
The game takes place after the events in Metal Gear Solid 3, with gamers returning to control the original Snake, who has become ‘Big Boss’. Unlike with Portable Ops, this game is considered as official canon within the universe. The gameplay follows the basis set down by prior incarnations, with a large emphasis around stealth and espionage. The over-the-shoulder angle of Metal Gear 4 debuts in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, making a mix of some of the finest features of prior games.
Peace Walker’s gameplay is based around a co-op core, following most of our current games by placing emphasis on teamwork. This is implemented thr ough Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in single player campaigns and multi player games, with a variety of alternate ‘Snakes’ to make a choice from. These differentiations range all the way from a stealth bias to heavy weapons expert, allow ing players to co-ordinate a balanced troupe.
The title is the first of 2 titles to be released into the Metal Gear universe over this year, with the Raiden-centric Metal Gear Solid Rising being released on next generation consoles later on. Kojima productions have made a great game in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, combining all the classic features of prior titles into an innovative new gameplay. The game’s graphics and audio have been polished to a superlative calibre and the story seems as if it will be, as always, suitably epic.
